Adding Multiparametric MRI to Prostate Cancer Screening Will Save Lives and Money

In recent years, recommendations for prostate cancer screening have been caught amidst growing controversy. The utility of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, the most prominent front-line screening exam for prostate cancer has been heavily critiqued. Meanwhile, numerous men present with incurable late-stage prostate cancer while men with low-risk, indolent disease receive treatment that offers little benefit in terms of health outcomes. USPSTF Recommendations Ignore Realities of Breast Cancer

Annual mammogram screening beginning at age 40 saves lives. U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends less frequent screening at a later age, not because screening will not save lives, but because it will not save sufficient numbers of lives when started before age 50.

CMS Announces Final Rule for Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening

On Feb 5, 2015, CMS announced the final decision to cover low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening in high-risk patients. LDCT lung cancer screening has the potential to save more lives than any other lung cancer screening test yet developed. Despite a 32 percent reduction in lung cancer mortality between 1975 and 2000, lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and accounted for 27 percent of all cancer deaths in 2014. Study Compares MRI-TRUS Fusion Biopsy to Traditional Biopsy

Ongoing research has consistently shown that multiparametric prostate MRI can aid prostate cancer screening and improve detection rates. New results to a large-scale study investigating the effectiveness of MRI-TRUS fusion biopsy versus traditional TRUS biopsy demonstrate the superiority of multiparametric prostate MRI in prostate cancer detection.

MRI-TRUS Fusion Biopsy Versus Traditional TRUS Biopsy

In a study sponsored by the National Institute of Health, more than 1,000 men with elevated PSA levels were observed over a period of seven years. The purpose […]

Beyond Biopsy: A Growing Role for MRI in Prostate Cancer Care

Much attention paid to multiparametric prostate MRI has focused on its ability to improve prostate cancer detection and diagnosis. However, prostate MRI has the potential to improve other aspects of prostate cancer care. Beyond guiding biopsy needles, prostate MRI can also aid prostate cancer staging, inform treatment planning and to monitor patients following treatment.

Prostate MRI in Local Staging of Prostate Cancer

Pre-treatment staging is essential to determining an appropriate disease management strategy in men with prostate cancer. Staging prostate cancer […]
